When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was he answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” So, obviously loving our neighbors is incredibly important to God and while these times can make it difficult, there are still ways to do this. And during this time it might be as important as ever! Here are a few helpful ways to “love your neighbor” during this season and be the hands and feet of Jesus to our neighbors.
MAKE THE FIRST MOVE
Reach out by text, email or a phone call to see how they are doing and if they need anything. Don’t know your neighbor yet? No problem. Put a note on their door to introduce yourself and let them know to reach out if you can help in any way.

Go on walks or sit outside or relax on your front porch. As you see neighbors out themselves make a point to stop and talk to them.
When out shopping or ordering groceries, grab a few extra items and just drop off on a neighbor’s doorstep with a note letting them know you were just thinking about them.
MAKE A CONNECTION
If you happen to know an elderly person/couple in your neighborhood, drop by (socially distanced) or text and see if they need anything. (groceries, prescription refills, etc) Just knowing someone thought of them and reached out is sometimes what they needed most.
This can be a very challenging time for single parents as they might not want to take their young children out to run errands or pick up groceries. Next time you are heading out, check in to see if there is anything they might need you to pick up.
Many of us might be sheltering in our homes, but we are doing it with family. There are many who might be sheltering alone and are lonely. Reach out to them and check on them or invite them to a “socially distant” gathering of neighbors.
